Sound: Sounds are typical for this type of shooter.Įnjoyment: Fans of 2D side scrollers will like the action. An added bonus is the visible features on Hocus' face. Graphics: Graphics are colorful and detailed variety of environments reflects good design imagination. As it is, though, Hocus Pocus is a decent 2D shooter, designed with notable creativity. No explanation is given about the monsters or wizards encountered, nor is there enough information provided on the world or Popopa - all would add to the fun. One aspect missing from the game is background on the fantasy world in which Hocus lives.

Wizards lurk in certain areas of the castle labyrinths and offer helpful information, and the manual offers four cheats to keep Hocus in the game. Unlike Prince of Persia, the graphics are detailed enough to see Hocus' facial features, although he always appears to be smiling even when he's attacked. Because spells can wear out, they should be used when possible - one strategy is to remember where they are so they can be retrieved only when needed. Magical potions and spells help Hocus along the way, including health (death is possible), extra firepower, warp capability (saves time), and the ability to jump higher when required to obtain treasures normally out of reach. Pocus must obtain a prescribed number of magical spheres, but, for the adventurous, there are plenty of hidden treasures in the castle worth different points.

Hocus navigates through mazes of passages and hallways in various castles, and often has to find a key to open a locked door by exploring underneath the castle. The environments are large enough to get lost in regularly. Also, a wide assortment of enemies pop out of nowhere and attack Hocus in unique and surprising ways, such as flowers that shoot flower heads across the room and hedgehogs that roll into him. Each has three difficulty levels, determined by the number of monsters and their resistance to death.Ī well-crafted, 2D side scroller, Hocus Pocus contains a wide variety of colorful and detailed environments. The head of that august organization, Terexin, insists that before either event occurs, Hocus must first prove his worthiness by passing four arduous tests: Time Tripping, Warped and Weary, Shattered Worlds, and Destination Home. Although a quite typical platformer, this game is also very fun and interesting to play, with relatively okay graphics (definitely could be better) but lacking a good sound system.Hocus Pocus, our hero, is a young magician who aspires to earn a seat on the Council of Wizards, and marry young Popopa. The final level of each episode contains a boss fight. You also get bonus points if you finish a level in a specified time frame. The prizes are not obligatory for picking up, but you can get bonus points if you do. You also collect lots of jewels, emerald, diamonds and other prizes which give you more points. The main objective of this great game is to collect all crystal balls that are in the level to proceed to the next, while jumping over traps and avoiding obstacles as well as vanquishing evil enemies that stand in your way. This was one of my favorite platform games (like Captain Claw is, too) when I was a child and it still is today.

Overall, this is a sound platformer that stands up as a good example of the genre and is to be recommended.

Although individual levels are quite short, there are enough to provide a good challenge, and each has its own distinct visual flair with cool character design and some striking graphical effects. A variety of potions and power-ups are available and added interest is provided by the boss encounters. While not especially original or imaginative, this is actually a solid platformer, which benefits from tight controls, eye-catching graphics, and even some excellent music and neat sound effects. Along the way, Hocus encounters all number of enemies out to defeat him, including walking mushrooms, giant lizards and even Eskimos. These tasks require the player to collect the magic crystals that will allow Hocus to unleash his true potential, while also winning the hand of his sweetheart.

It features a surprisingly deep and detailed storyline, which tells the tale of an apprentice magician named Hocus, who must prove his worth by completing a series of tasks set by the Council of Wizards. Fans of classic platformers like Manic Miner, Jetpack and Pitfall would be well advised to check out this little-known gem from 1994.
